For years, Tesla Motors dominated the battery-electric vehicle (BEV) market in the United States. No other manufacturer was building such desirable BEVs while rapidly expanding its network of DC fast chargers (DCFC). Owning a Tesla was not only cool, it was almost convenient.
But with the launch of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Ford Motor Company has a worthy rival to the Tesla Model Y. The Mustang Mach-E and Model Y are compact SUVs, which makes them enticing for consumers who want an electric vehicle but don’t want to give up the versatility of crossover SUV ownership.

Price and Value
2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E
Although 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E pricing ranges from $43,895 to $61,995 (not including the $1,100 destination charge), Ford stopped taking orders for the 2022 model in April 2022. Depending on where you live, you might be able to find an unclaimed Mustang Mach-E in dealer inventory. According to the company, Ford will start taking orders for the 2023 Mach-E on August 15, 2022.
For 2022, Ford offers its 5-passenger electric crossover SUV in four trim levels: Select, Premium, California Route 1, and GT. All trims except the GT have a standard rear electric-drive motor and are rear-wheel drive (RWD). The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT has an additional front electric-drive motor and is all-wheel drive (AWD). A dual-motor setup is optional on the other trim levels.
Ford also offers standard- and extended-range battery packs. The GT uses the bigger battery pack to maximize performance: It’s significantly quicker than other Mach-E crossovers but isn’t as energy-efficient. All 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUVs qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit, and the 2023 models will also.
The Mustang Mach-E offers more in the way of connected services than other Fords. Its remote access features allow you to lock the doors, activate the climate control, and open the windows or rear liftgate. It also has a digital key component that will enable you to use your smartphone to access and drive this EV. You can enable 911 Assist in the Sync infotainment interface for automatic collision notification. The Wi-Fi hotspot includes a 3-month complimentary trial.
Ford does not offer free scheduled maintenance. The automaker recommends a tire rotation and a multi-point inspection every 12 months or 10,000 miles.
If you look up 2022 Tesla Model Y pricing, you’ll find that it ranges from $59,990 to $69,990, not including the $1,200 destination charge. As of this publication, the Tesla website shows only Model Y Long Range and Model Y Performance trim levels, but in April 2022, Tesla added a base Model Y AWD trim level. It’s the first version of the Tesla Model Y built at the company’s newest Gigafactory in Austin, Texas. Although Tesla isn’t officially taking orders for the new base model, some customers with existing orders reportedly were offered the opportunity to pivot to the Texas-built Tesla Model Y.
Every 2022 Tesla Model Y comes standard with AWD via dual motors. Five-passenger seating is standard; an occasional-use, 2-passenger third-row seat is optional. Teslas no longer qualify for a federal tax credit.
Connected services on the Model Y include typical remote access features plus the ability to grant remote access to family members needing to drive the car. You’ll also get automatic collision notification and a digital key.
If you’re worried about theft, you can enable PIN to Drive. Sentry mode records video footage of potential break-ins. Dog mode keeps the climate control running while your dog is waiting in the Y and displays a message on the infotainment screen for would-be animal advocates advising them that Prince is comfortable and you’ll be back soon. The Enhanced Autopilot package includes Smart Summon, which allows your Model Y to come to you in parking lots.
All Tesla Model Ys come with a Wi-Fi hotspot that provides connectivity for the navigation system. You’ll need to buy a premium connectivity package if you want to use Sentry mode or stream videos.
Tesla does not offer complimentary scheduled maintenance. Although the company does not require maintenance or inspections at specific intervals, Tesla advises owners to rotate the Model Y’s tires “every 6,250 miles, or if the tread depth difference is 2/32 inch or greater.”

2022 Tesla Model Y
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is too new for inclusion in the J.D. Power 2022 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which assesses owner-reported problems during the third year of ownership. The Mach-E is not among the three highest-ranked models in the Compact SUV segment in the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS). However, the Mustang Mach-E does rank second among Mass-Market BEVs in the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Ownership Study, which examines satisfaction among EV owners. The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E comes with the following warranty coverage:

- Powertrain warranty: 5 years or 60,000 miles
- Electric-vehicle component/high-voltage battery warranty: 8 years or 100,000 miles (10 years or 150,000 miles in California emissions states)

Like the Mustang Mach-E, the Tesla Model Y is too new for inclusion in the 2022 VDS. While Tesla’s electric compact crossover took part in the 2022 IQS, it is ineligible for awards because Tesla Motors does not allow J.D. Power access to owner information in the 15 U.S. states where the law requires such permission. The Tesla Model Y ranks second among Premium BEVs in the 2022 EVX. The 2022 Tesla Model Y comes with the following warranty coverage:

Tesla offers longer standard and powertrain warranties, but Ford provides an extra year of roadside assistance.
Performance and Efficiency
2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E
If you select a RWD 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E with the standard-range, 70-kilowatt-hour battery pack, your vehicle will make 266 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, and Ford says it will accelerate to 60 mph in about 5.8 seconds. One-pedal driving capability is standard. With dual motors and the standard battery pack, the Mach-E’s torque rating increases to 428 pound-feet, and the zero-to-60-mph estimate drops to 5.2 seconds.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the RWD Ford Mustang Mach-E with the standard-range pack for 247 miles of range and gives it an energy consumption rating of 32.6 kWh/100 miles. With AWD, the standard-range Mach-E is EPA-rated for 224 miles of range and 36.3 kWh/100 miles.
The extended-range, 91-kWh battery pack is available starting on the Premium trim. Thus equipped, the RWD Mach-E develops 290 hp and has more range but is slower due to the heavier battery pack. All-wheel-drive Mach-E crossovers fare better: In addition to more range, they make 346 hp and are quicker to 60 mph.
The EPA rates extended-range RWD models for 303 miles of range and 34.6 kWh/100 miles and AWD models for 277 miles and 37.1 kWh/100 miles. With its revised software, the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E California Route 1 trim offers more range with either drive configuration. It rates 314 miles and 33.3 kWh/100 miles with RWD and 312 miles and 34.3 kWh/100 miles with AWD.
The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT makes 480 hp and either 600 or 634 pound-feet of torque, depending on whether you get the Performance Edition option package. Either way, Ford says your electric compact SUV will be capable of reaching 60 mph in under 4 seconds. Range dips to an EPA-rated 270 miles (260 with the Performance package) and energy consumption rates 40.2 kWh/100 miles (41.2 kWh on GT Performance).
Although it’s possible to charge a BEV using a standard 110-volt outlet if you have the time, most 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E owners will want to set up Level 2 charging at home to shorten the wait. In addition, Mustang Mach-E owners have access to the BlueOval Charge Network. You get 250 kWh of complimentary charging at Electrify America stations when you buy a 2022 Mustang Mach-E.
Ford doesn’t provide a tow rating for the U.S.-spec 2022 Mustang Mach-E.
The Texas-built, base 2022 Tesla Model Y AWD has a 91-kW front electric-drive motor and a 200-kW rear electric-drive motor. Tesla integrated a redesigned battery pack into the Model Y’s structure, featuring a new 4680 cell design. The EPA pegs the base model’s range at 279 miles and rates its energy consumption at 28 kWh/100 miles—more efficient than any 2022 Mustang Mach-E.
The 2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range uses basically the same electric motors. It’s EPA-rated for 330 miles of range and 28 kWh/100 miles. Tesla claims it will hit 60 mph in a brisk 4.8 seconds.
The Model Y Performance is a full second quicker to 60 mph and has a top speed of 155 mph. It uses 133-kW front- and 179-kW rear-drive electric motors. The EPA rates it for 303 miles of range and 30 kWh/100 miles.
Tesla Model Y owners have access to the Tesla Supercharger network, which provides Level 3 DCFC and mostly quashes range anxiety when you’re away from home. The network’s broad coverage remains a primary advantage of the Model Y (and all Teslas) over any other BEV on the market.
An available tow package gives the 2022 Model Y a 3,500-pound rating.

2022 Tesla Model Y
The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E comes standard with a Ford Co-Pilot 360 2.0 package of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). All trims include forward-collision warning (FCW) with automatic emergency braking (AEB) and pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning (BSW) with rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning (LDW), lane-keeping assistance (LKA), emergency steering assistance (ESA), and intersection turn assistance (ITA).
The Mustang Mach-E also provides standard Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance via adaptive cruise control (ACC) with stop-and-go capability and lane-centering assistance. Certain trim levels offer Ford BlueCruise, which allows hands-free Level 2 driving assistance on certain divided highways in the U.S. and Canada. You’ll also get Ford’s Active Park Assist 2.0, which manages the steering, brakes, and acceleration.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not published crash-test ratings for the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rates the 2022 Mustang Mach-E a Top Safety Pick.
Consumers will find that the 2022 Tesla Model Y comes standard with FCW with AEB, BSW, LDW, and LKA. Its standard Autopilot package provides Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance via ACC with stop-and-go capability and lane-centering assistance. The optional Enhanced Autopilot package adds automatic lane-change capability and Autopark active parking assistance.
The Full Self Driving (FSD) package can slow your Model Y automatically for red lights and stop signs on surface streets. Despite its name, FSD does not allow the Model Y to drive itself. Further, you’ll need to attain a high Safety Score to access all of its functionality. Consumers should also be aware that FSD is under scrutiny by federal regulators after several serious accidents involving Tesla drivers who were apparently using the technology.
Nevertheless, Tesla scores highest in the J.D. Power 2021 U.S. Tech Experience (TXI) Study, which surveyed owners of new 2021 model-year vehicles. Although it’s an unofficial ranking (due to Tesla only permitting access to owner data in 35 U.S. states), owner enthusiasm runs high, and Tesla’s frequent over-the-air (OTA) software updates are likely a significant factor.
The NHTSA hasn’t rated the 2022 Tesla Model Y, but the 2021 model earned the highest-possible 5 stars across the board in all tests, including 5 stars for rollover resistance. The structurally similar 2022 Model Y Long Range and Performance should perform similarly. The IIHS rates the 2022 Tesla Model Y a Top Safety Pick+, which is the Institute’s highest safety accolade.

Infotainment and Technology
2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E
Consumers will find a 15.5-inch touchscreen display in every 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E. Ford mounts it vertically like an iPad in portrait mode, and it runs off the Sync 4 infotainment platform. A large, physical volume dial near the bottom of the screen is a friendly touch. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring is standard, along with factory navigation, OTA updates, natural-voice recognition, and a wireless charging pad.
The 2022 Tesla Model Y has a horizontally-mounted 15-inch touchscreen interface. You’ll use it for everything because it takes the place of a traditional instrument panel and many secondary controls. There’s no volume knob. Factory navigation, OTA updates, natural-voice recognition, and a wireless charging pad are standard, but the system does not support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Tesla offers built-in apps like Netflix and YouTube, plus various music-streaming apps and an internet browser.

Comfort and Utility
2022 Tesla Model Y
Apart from their large touchscreens, the interiors of these electric compact crossovers are a study in contrast. The minimalist design in the 2022 Tesla Model Y has gone over well with many consumers, but the more traditional approach in the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E will appeal to buyers who want a BEV that looks and feels like other SUVs in this price range.
Both SUVs offer synthetic, vinyl-type upholstery instead of genuine leather. And both offer comfortable, spacious seating and can accommodate a pair of adults or rear-facing car seats in the second row.
The Tesla Model Y has the edge in cargo capacity with 30.2 cubic feet behind its second-row seats (26.6 in 7-passenger models) and a maximum of 72.1 cubic feet (67.9 in 7-seaters). There’s an additional 4.1 cubic feet in the Model Y’s “frunk.” A power liftgate is standard.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E still offers functional space for its size, with 29.7 cubic feet behind its rear seats (26.6 on the GT). The maximum capacity is 59.7 cubic feet (54.7 on the GT). The Mega Power Frunk adds another 4.7 cubic feet and includes a drain plug in case you want to fill it with ice during tailgate parties. A manual liftgate is standard on the Select trim, but a power-assisted liftgate with hands-free access is available.
The Ford offers a more conventional and user-friendly interior design, but the Tesla has more cargo capacity and an available third row.
